Our team had a fantastic and informative experience at REI 2024 in India, connecting with clients and industry leaders to discuss the latest trends in PV modules and BESS technologies. Special thanks to our Solar and BESS experts, Elias and Stefano, for gathering these key takeaways from the trade show:
1 – Indian-made PV Modules
Manufacturers are proactively scaling up to meet ALMM requirements. By 2025, all major Indian PV module producers are expanding their capacities to multi-GW levels, focusing primarily on serving the domestic market rather than exports. While most cells are still imported, there’s a move toward vertical integration, with domestic cell in the pipeline, wafer and ingot production planned to follow at a later stage. Though factory quality, automation, and throughput aren’t quite at the level of Chinese counterparts yet, the momentum in India is undeniable.
2 – Indian-made BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems)
There are two key advantages to choosing Indian-made BESS: easier warranty negotiations between Indian companies and savings on import taxes. While Indian utility-scale BESS manufacturers will reach around 500 MWh capacity by 2025, plans are already set to scale up to a few GWh by 2026. Though current deployments are small compared to the USA, the future is bright for India’s BESS sector, with several GWh of projects in the pipeline.
A big shout-out to all the brilliant minds we met at REI! We at STS are ready to support module buyers in securing high-quality Indian-made modules. Our local advisory, audit, and inspection teams are also here to help you optimize the energy yield of your BESS projects.
See you next year!
